Union minister Nitin Gadkari fainted today at an event in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar. Gadkari was on a stage when he fainted and almost fell down.

Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao, who was also on the stage, caught hold of Gadkari.

Gadkari was then taken to a hospital from where he was later discharged and left for Shirdi.

He also posted a message on Twitter saying that he is doing well and that he fainted because of low blood sugar.

Gadkari was in Ahmednagar for the convocation ceremony of the Mahatma Phule Agricultural University.

Gadkari addressed the ceremony and returned to his seat. A few moments later when Gadkari stood up for the national anthem, he suddenly fainted and almost fell down.

A video of the event shows Gadkari standing up and then freezing before slowly dropping back down towards his chair. The people gathered around him, including Govenor Vidyasagar Rao, catch hold of Gadkari and help him sit back on his chair.

It was a full 10 minutes before Gadkari's condition improved. He was fed a sweet and was given some water before being taken to a hospital. He later left for Shirdi.

Nitin Gadkari is the minister for road transport and highways as well as shipping and water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation. He is seen as one of the most hardworking ministers of the Narendra Modi cabinet.

He won in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the Nagpur constituency in Maharashtra.
