Former U.S. Attorney General Barr may return to job

A month after firing Jeff Sessions... President Donald Trump has settled on a leading candidate to replace him as the nation's attorney general.

Sources telling Reuters the top contender is Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr..

Who served in that role under the late President George H.W.

Bush.

Trump dismissed Sessions last month after months of frustration over his decision to recuse himself from the probe into election meddling by Russia and possible collusion by Trump's campaign..

In a controversial move, last month Trump named Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general, putting him in charge of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, despite media comments by Whitaker that were critical of the probe, Barr has also been skeptical of the allegations surrounding the Mueller probe..

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump could choose his nominee for the post in the coming days.

If Trump chooses Barr, it's unlikely the Senate would be able to consider his nomination until early 2019...
