‘AIIMS vehicle dropped him at Haridwar after discharge’

Activist Sant Gopal Das, who had been on an indefinite fast since June to demand conservation of the Ganga, has been missing from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here since Tuesday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti said on Thursday.

‘Discharged on Tuesday’

An AIIMS official, however, said that the Ganga activist, who had been admitted to the institute on November 6, was discharged on Tuesday and dropped by an AIIMS vehicle at Haridwar upon his request.

Mr. Bharti, who along with the activist’s father Shamsher Singh and others staged a candlelight vigil outside AIIMS, said the hospital authorities had informed him that the activist was taken to Dehradun and left outside the District Magistrate’s (DM) office there.

“Were not the AIIMS authorities ashamed of leaving a man, who had been on fast for over 160 days, without any protection, alone outside DM’s office? If AIIMS had done its duty of taking care of him, we would not be forced to protest,” he said outside AIIMS.

The Ganga activist’s mentor, G.D. Agarwal, had died on October 11, on Day 112 of his fast against the lack of efforts to clean the river.
