On Thursday, the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) had dashed off a letter to the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising India legends Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, asking them to conduct interviews for the role. However, the CAC is yet to respond. Gaekwad, though, confirmed that he had accepted the request to be on the panel.
“I was approached by the BCCI to be on the interview panel to select the women’s coach and I have agreed to the request,” Gaekwad told CricketNext. “They will inform me in due course where I have to go for the interviews.”
Gaekwad was the men’s team coach during the 1999 World Cup in England and was awarded the BCCI Lifetime Achievement Award in June this year. It is understood that along with Gaekwad, former India captain and coach Kapil Dev has also been approached to be on the panel, though it couldn’t be confirmed if Dev has accepted the request.
When contacted, BCCI General Manager (cricketing operations) Saba Karim, who is in-charge of womens’s cricket, said the board is still waiting to hear back from CAC.
“We have sent a mail to CAC last night and we are still waiting to hear back from them,” Karim told CricketNext. “However, if they turn down our request, alternative arrangements will be decided by the BCCI and CoA.”
However, the process that is being followed to identify the next coach has not gone down well with BCCI office bearers.
“The Supreme Court directive had clearly mentioned that the CoA had to engage with the CAC for taking major cricketing decisions till the new BCCI management took over,” a senior BCCI official, who didn’t wish to be identified, said.
“Now, we have a case here for the second time that CAC has refused to get involved. On the previous occasion, they turned down the request to pick the junior selection committee but that time their objection was justified with conflict of interest situation with Sachin Tendulkar.
“This time there is no conflict but the CoA have not given them enough time to select the coach because of their hastily made decisions. It is certainly going against the BCCI constitution as well as SC directives, if a committee like this is constituted arbitrarily.”
Meanwhile, it is understood that outgoing coach Ramesh Powar has not yet applied for the position after his contract wasn’t renewed under acrimonious circumstances due to a confrontation with senior player Mithali Raj. According to sources close to CoA, it is unlikely that Powar will be picked even if he applies for the position.
The women team coach’s role has become much sought after with BCCI offering as much as Rs 3 to 4 crore per year as remuneration for the job. The BCCI advertisement states that the applicant “Needs to be a Level C qualified coach, should have played international cricket, or coached an international team for at least one year, or Coached in a T20 tournament for two seasons, or played at least 50 first-class matches.”
The last date for application is December 14, with the interviews scheduled for December 20.
