Family members of Santacruz resident Aishwarya Vanjare (17), who met with a road accident after a BEST bus ran over her legs, has now decided to file a court case for accident compensation in order to pay bills and bear the other medical and personal cost of the teenager.
Vanjare recovered within a few months and started going to college again, however, her bill cost around Rs 20 lakh for two months of medical treatment in a private hospital. She was discharged from the hospital in August last week.
Her uncle Prakash Vanjare, an auto driver, who has been running from pillar to post in BEST office to get the compensation, said, "Last month, I visited the Goregaon BEST bus depot where accident claims and compensation department functions. They told me to submit the original documents after which the process would start. It will took at least one year for the process to start and around Rs 40,000 might be compensated. We are yet to pay her hospital bill of around 20 lakh rupees. Rather than waiting for a year, we are planning to file a court case against BEST for accidents."
Speaking with DNA earlier, the BEST officials stated that they are treating Vanjare's case as a special case of compensation.
Asking about the status of compensation, Ashish Chemburkar, chairman of BEST committee, said, "In Vanjare's case, the compensation will be decided only after the hearing. The process is still going on. The matter is with the general manager of BEST."
Vanjare, who stays with her elder brother and grandmother, met with a bus accident on July 3. For the first few weeks, she underwent multiple surgeries and procedures almost daily. It cost her around Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 for a routine check once a month.
Prakash added, "Besides compensation, we want the driver to be suspended too." A skin grafting was performed on her left leg. She had suffered injuries in the lower left limb, near the pelvic region, which had a fracture.
