Coimbatore: A 27-year-old man was arrested for preventing a traffic police constable, who caught him riding a two-wheeler without helmet, from discharging his duty at Athupalam here on Friday.
According to the city police, the incident took place when M Mohammed Javed, of Vasantha Garden at Kuniyamuthur, was heading to Athupalam from Sunnambukalavai on a motorcycle.

“As he was not wearing helmet, grade one traffic police constable Ayyalu Ganeshan, 36, asked him stop the vehicle. Mohammed, who runs a furniture shop, did not stop the motorcycle at the spot. After parking the vehicle near Athupalam toll plaza, he approached the traffic cop and questioned him for trying to stop him,” a police officer said.

Mohammed, he said, abused the constable and attempted to snatch the walkie talkie from him. During the scuffle, the walkie talkie fell on road and damaged.

Immediately, the constable informed the Kuniyamuthur police, who took Mohammed to the police station. Based on Ganeshan’s complaint, the Kuniyamuthur police registered a case against Mohammed under sections 294(b), 353 and 506(i) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested him.

Mohammed was later produced before the judicial magistrate court -VII and lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison under judicial custody.
