NOIDA: A resident of Sector 12 has alleged that he was cheated of Rs 6.80 lakh through the UPI app. A complaint has been lodged at Sector 20 police station that has been referred to the cyber cell.
According to 30-year-old Mohan Lal, the amount was transferred from his SBI savings account through the UPI app by hackers in the past two months. “It was on December 4 when I visited an ATM to withdraw some money that I found out the fraud. I then went to my bank branch in Sector 2, only to learn that the money was transferred seven times from my account since September 29,” he said. Surprisingly, Lal did not receive any alert message regarding the transactions. “Probably this is because I don’t have a smartphone,” Lal said.
Manoj Panth, SHO of Sector 20 police station, said that they would take help from the cyber cell to solve the case. “We will soon lodge an FIR against the culprits,” he added.
A cyber cell official said people could easily be duped through the UPI app. “Hackers can get a duplicate SIM from a mobile store by blocking the original one. Once they have the new connection, they can download the UPI app on a cell phone and then register the bank account details with it to illegally transfer money. They can also clone the SIM card of those who already using the UPI app and transfer money after downloading the app,” he said. UPI is a one-stop platform for multiple bank accounts.
