EC shunts senior cop over 3am Telangana raid

HYDERABAD: The Election Commission on Wednesday transferred Vikarabad superintendent of police, T Annapurna, after Congress accused her of unfairly arresting Telangana Congress working president A Revanth Reddy in a pre-dawn raid a day earlier. The commission also told local authorities not to give her election duties.

Central crime station deputy commissioner of police Avinash Mohanty was appointed as Vikarabad SP in her place.

Revanth, who is contesting the December 7 assembly election from Kodangal, is a vocal critic of CM K Chandrasekhar Rao and had threatened to hold protests before KCR’s rally in his constituency. Cops had barged into his bedroom at 3am on Tuesday on the ground that threatening to disrupt an election rally was against the model code of conduct.

The transfer sparked a debate in police circles on whether Annapurna was being made a scapegoat given that she was only following orders.

Telangana chief electoral officer, Rajat Kumar said, “ECI had called for a report from district election officers, observers and me and directed the SP be transferred out. I had given a panel of available officers from which Mohanty was selected.”
