Sagayapuram councillor V. Elumalai passed away early on Thursday around 1:30 a.m. The councillor was admitted to a private hospital here around 20 days ago and was reportedly on ventilator support for as many days. He passed away due to multi-organ failure.

He is survived by his wife and three children.

According to sources, the councillor, who was the chairperson for the Standing Committee for Social Justice, had also slipped into a coma. They said Elumalai was admitted to a private hospital in Fraser Town for a simple surgery. However, he reportedly suffered a heart attack during the surgery and was rushed to another private hospital where he was put on ventilator.

Several councillors had raised the issue in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council recently, alleging medical negligence on part of the hospital in Fraser Town.

BBMP sources said the funeral would be held at K.G.Halli on Thursday.
