Preeti Saran, a former senior Indian diplomat, has been elected unopposed to an Asia Pacific seat on the UN's Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR).

Saran, 60, will begin her four-year term on January 1.

She joined the Indian Foreign Service in August 1982. She has served in Indian missions at Moscow, Dhaka, Cairo, Geneva, Toronto and Vietnam.[19] Saran was the Consul General of India at Toronto and the Indian Ambassador to Vietnam.
