LDF councillors visit solid waste treatment plant

The absence of leachate treatment facility at the municipal solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram has led to serious environmental issues, according to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) councillors in the Kochi Corporation.

A delegation of LDF councillors visited the plant site to obtain first-hand information on the situation there on Wednesday.

The LDF’s move come in the wake of the renewed focus on the functioning of the plant following an order from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which slapped a fine of ₹1 crore and a performance guarantee on the Kochi Corporation. It was the absence of the leachate treatment plant and the delay in opening the waste-to-energy plant that invited the wrath of the NGT. The huge quantities of plastic waste that has been piled up on the campus may catch fire. The civic body should take immediate steps to address the situation, said a communication from the councillors. The delegation was led by K.J. Antony, the leader of the LDF in the council, and V.P. Chandran, the CPI(M) leader in the council.
