NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old conman who had cheated many people by “selling” them properties already on mortgage landed in police net after he was tricked by the bank he defrauded.
Sarabjit Singh had ‘sold’ several houses in upscale localities and duped several people of crores of rupees in the last two years. On August 29, one Gurinder Pal Singh complained to the police about being cheated by Sarabjit. A case was lodged at Kirti Nagar police station.
Gurinder alleged that Sarabjit sold the third floor of a building to him for Rs 73 lakh, stating that the property was free of any encumbrance. But bank officials went to Gurinder later and said that Sarabjit had taken a loan of Rs 41 lakh on the same property in October 2016.
When Gurinder tried to contact Sarabjit, his number was found to be switched off. Police then investigated the case and examined bank documents as well as those from the sub-registrar’s office. Sarabjit was found to be absconding. So the police told the bank authorities that if Sarabjit contacted them again, they should offer to return him his original property papers under a loan waiver scheme of the Centre.
When Sarabjit contacted the bank again, he was told that his loans had been waived and that he should collect the original property papers from the bank. Sarabjit went to the branch at IFFCO Chowk in Gurgaon and was arrested.
