LUCKNOW: They would come to high-end weddings in expensive suits and ties, carrying “gifts” for the bride and groom. These well-heeled “guests” would then quietly walk out with gifts meant for the newly-wed couple, making several lakhs during in the course of the evening.
Police claim to have solved several high profile wedding heists in the city after arresting two alleged thieves — Shiva, 18, and Prashant, 20 — while the duo was planning to pull off another theft at a wedding in Moti Mahal garden on Wednesday night.
The cops said they had recovered 21 wedding gift envelopes, with Rs 97,000 in cash, from the youths, who are natives of Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. The two have confessed to having carried out 12 wedding thefts in the city, police said.
The gang came under the police radar after two big wedding thefts in the city — one at Balrampur Garden on November 25, from where valuables and cash worth Rs 4 lakh was stolen, and the other a Rs 3-lakh heist at Uttarakhand Bhavan in Vibhutikhand on November 21.
A police team was formed to crack the two cases. “We checked the CCTV footage of the wedding at Balrampur Garden and saw the duo loitering around the place where the gifts were kept. The two were also not seen greeting or meeting anyone in the wedding,” said circle officer (Hazratganj) Abhay Mishra.
The footage also showed the two leaving the venue with a big bag.
