Students raise alarm over security lapse, seek action

A group of ‘outsiders’ in cars, motorcycles and a truck, carrying saffron flags and shouting communal slogans allegedly entered Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on Wednesday morning and carried out a rally on the premises.

Students and teachers of the university raised an alarm and questioned how outsiders were allowed to enter the campus without checks when even students of the university are stopped at the gate and asked to show their identity cards.

No comment from JNU

The JNU administration did not comment on the incident.

The JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) said that between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., the outsiders breached security and came through JNU’s Saraswatipuram gate.

“We were told by the security personnel that there was no prior permission for such a rally to be organised by these outsiders in the campus, who with saffron flags were vitiating the campus environment with communal slogans and were instigating an atmosphere of fear and violence,” the JNUSU said in a statement.

It added that the security department was unaware of how the security breach occurred, who the people were or who gave them permission.

“The JNU security and G4S should have immediately informed the local police station and should have taken necessary action to stop these outsiders from getting further inside the campus,” the JNUSU said.

It added that it was unfortunate that the administration, “which penalises and punishes students, teachers and karmachari’s for peaceful and democratic protest against anti-student, anti-teacher and anti-worker policies” has shown complete “spinelessness” in dealing with the security breach.

The JNUSU pointed out that Chief Security Officer Naveen Yadav, who it said took no time to prepare a “false” security report — leading to filing of sedition case against then JNU students and JNUSU office bearers — based on “concocted evidence and doctored videos” in 2016, has not taken any action regarding the incident.

The students demanded that the administration file a case against the intruders who they said intimidated and created an environment of fear on campus.

In a letter to the V-C, the students asked that action be taken against both the G4S security agency, which handles JNU’s security, and Mr. Yadav for allowing the outsiders on campus.
