Apollo Speciality Hospitals here has successfully performed total knee replacement through ‘Novo’ technique, a cost-effective and less painful method – a first of its kind in Southern districts, according to the hospital.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, Jayesh Sonaje, Consultant Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement and Arthroscopy Surgeon at the hospital, said while joint replacement surgeries had evolved a lot over the past few years, ‘Novo’ focussed on performing ‘total knee replacement’ surgeries in a cost-effective, less time-consuming way with best possible results.

“Conventional techniques involved use of a large number of surgical equipment, on which the surgeon is fully dependent for achieving precision. Novo, on the other hand, focusses on achieving the same thing in a more effective way with surgeon’s expertise and skills and with minimal or no use of instruments,” he added.

Dr. Sonaje said the time taken for surgery, blood loss, length of incision, post-operative pain and physiotherapy and period of hospitalisation were less in Novo than in conventional methods.

Rohini Sridhar, Chief Operating Officer, Apollo Hospitals, Madurai division, said Apollo Speciality Hospitals here was constantly trying to stay one step ahead in adapting newer internationally-recognised techniques in providing better care to the patients.
