BHUBANESWAR: The opposition BJP and Congress on Monday mounted pressure on the state government to sack women and child development (WCD) minister Prafulla Samal in the wake of alleged sexual harassment of inmates at an NGO-run shelter home in Dhenkanal district.
The opposition parties countered Samal's claim that the homes run by the NGO - Good News India (GNI) - were not registered with the government, and said 15 of the organization's 22 homes in the state had been issued licences by the WCD department. However, Dream Centre - the branch in Beltikiri village in Dhenkanal district where the allegations surfaced three days ago - was unregistered. Samal had on Saturday said none of the centres run by GNI had licences.
The list of childcare institutions (CCIs) displayed on the website of the WCD department shows that there are 329 registered CCIs in Odisha. This includes 15 run by GNI.
Talking to the media here, BJP state women's wing president Pravati Parida said the government was only pretending to take action so that it didn't have to explain how the centres prospered and spread branches across Odisha. The BJP also alleged that these centres were being used for religious conversion, after a video of a purported conversion event at the centre went viral on social media.
