A carer has been acquitted of the sexual assault of a woman with cerebral palsy after denying the charge and claiming he was just 'cleaning her bum bum'.

The Nigerian man, 30, whose name was suppressed after a court heard he was assaulted in immigration detention, had recently finished a nursing course in Sydney.

The woman, 41, is speechless and gave evidence via a communication board after alleging she was penetrated in a shower by the carer, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The defendant told the court he was trained to ask those in his care for permission before washing their 'private parts and bum bum'.

Judge Paul Conlon likened the case to former ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie, who complained she 'felt icky' when touched on the back by a colleague.

He said it was 'staggering' that the carer's employer, the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, didn't provide care based on gender.

'You may be of the same view that I am that someone like (this woman) should not be placed in the situation where she felt so uncomfortable,' he said.

The man, who is in Australia on a student visa, was acquitted of aggravated sexual intercourse without consent.
