General Motors Canada CEO Travis Hester says the company will be hiring in Canada, despite the automaker’s plan to not allocate new product to its Oshawa Assembly Plant, according to the CBC.

"We're adding jobs and we're adding development expertise and all the associated things that go with that into Canada, where it just simply wasn't in the past," Hester told the public broadcaster during a tour of GM’s Canadian Technical Centre Markham Campus. “We see the future very strong here and in Canada for the development side."

Since January 2017, GM has hired 450 workers at the technical center and has plans to hire 500 more by 2020.

Hester says the automaker’s CAMI plant, which builds the Chevrolet Equinox in Ingersoll, Ont., and the St. Catharines powertrain plant are safe “for the immediate future.”

"So these are going to be unchanged and continuing for the immediate future," Hester told CBC.

He also said GM’s plan for Oshawa will remain unchanged.

"I don't think you could put anything else in Oshawa," he said. "Not without spending incredible amounts of investment, which would make it not viable."
