The Croatian captain's father, Stipe choked back tears in a moving tribute as his son broke a ten year duopoly held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, to be crowned as the world's best player.

There wasn't a dry eye in the house as a video montage was displayed during the gala, showing congratulatory messages from Modric's parents.

"My son, I am the happiest and proudest father in the world," he said.

"You are my genius. I can't find words. I am very happy."

After taking a moment to compose himself, Modric's father paid tribute to his son's hard work and professionalism to reach the top of world football.

"It is by your great work and your efforts that you got it. "Your father, your mother and the whole family are proud. I am happy."

Modric was announced as the winner of the prestigious prize in a glitzy ceremony held in Paris. Ronaldo was second, with France and Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann completing the podium.

"As a kid we all have dreams. My dream was to play for a big club and win important trophies," Modric said.

"The Ballon d'Or was more than just a dream for me and it is really an honour and a privilege to hold this trophy."
