Nissan Board Starts Discussions Over Ghosn Successor

Nissan’s board will have a meet today in order to decide on the person who’s going to replace Carlos Ghosn as the company’s chairman.

The choice of the board will indicate the direction of Nissan’s alliance with Renault, reports Bloomberg. Possible candidates for the job include CEO Hiroto Saikawa, who was a driving force behind Nissan’s internal investigation into Ghosn, and Toshiyuki Shiga, a former close associate of Carlos Ghosn.

If the board picks Saikawa, it would solidify his power at Nissan, which intends to push for a more balanced partnership with Renault. Saikawa has the most chances of becoming Nissan’s chairman, as he turned from a Ghosn protege into one of his most vocal critics of his alleged wrongdoing.

If the board picks Shiga as Chairman, it would likely result in a more collective management at Nissan, says the report.

The current structure in the alliance between the two carmakers has Renault as the largest shareholder of Nissan and with full voting rights in the company. Nissan on the other hand is the second-largest shareholder in Renault but with no power to vote. This has created an imbalance in the Alliance, one that’s gotten worse over the years with Nissan’s success in big markets like China and the US.

Renault has reportedly suggested external chairman candidates for Nissan, but that was rejected by the Japanese car maker.
