Four arrested for attack on fish vendor in Idukki

IDUKKI: Munnar police on Tuesday arrested four persons in connection with the mob attack on a fish vendor. The incident occurred on Thursday at Thonnuttaru near Kuvaitcity in Mankulam.
The arrested are Anakkulam Puthukkayil K George (62), his son Arun (35) and Kuwaitcity Oravalakudy J Aby (35) and Plappallil V Jayesh (32). Another accused Puthukkayil Saji (35) is absconding, police said. The arrested were produced to Devikulam court.
Thanolil Makkar Muhammed (68) of Adimali Tenthmile was allegedly attacked by a mob when he asked money for the fish he had sold. Visuals of the attack went viral on social media and Munnar police on Monday recorded Makkar’s statement and registered a case against five persons under Sections 143, 144, 149 (unlawful assembly) and 294(B) (obscene act in any public place).
“George and family had bought fish worth Rs 25,000 for debt from Makkar and when asked for money, they attacked him brutally,” relatives of Makkar said. Meanwhile, police said that a molestation bid against Arun’s wife led to the attack. “If the woman files a complaint against Makkar, we will register case against him,” said the police.
The joint action council on Tuesday observed a two-hour hartal at Adimali Tenthmile against the attack.
Munnar DSP P D Sunish Babu, C I Sam Jose and SI M M Fakrudin led the probe.
