A man who suffered severe brain injuries from a scooter crash while holidaying in Bali has died in hospital.

Jacob Mabb, 21, was placed into an induced coma and flown from Bali back to Brisbane after the crash on November 25.

Mr Mabb, a former surf coach on the Sunshine Coast, was flown in the RACQ LifeFlight jet to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital on Friday night.

He had been receiving treatment in Bali for nearly a week.

His parents also set up a bedside vigil, The Courier-Mail reported.

Mr Mabb was an environmental science student and played rugby for the University of the Sunshine Coast.

He coached at XL Surfing Academy on Mooloolaba Beach, and was described by colleague Carlene Sherwell, 50, as a hard worker and a genuine young man.

She said she found out about his death on Monday afternoon at about 4pm, and believed he had died earlier in the day.

She told Daily Mail Australia: 'He worked for us for about five years from the age of 16 until he left to do a traineeship geared towards his studies in environmental science about a year ago.

'Jacob was a genuine, very softly-spoken young man. He loved playing rugby as well and working with the kids at the surf school between the ages of five to 10-years-old.'

The 50-year-old, who was Mr Mabb's boss during his time at XL, said those who knew him at the surf school had been walking around 'like zombies' since they heard of his death.

Ms Sherwell had previously asked members of the club to help fund a medical evacuation for Mr Mabb.

His student rugby club was one of the first to post tributes to social media - along with well-known Sunshine Coast surfer Rob Sherwell.

Mr Sherwell said: 'It's with a heavy heart and a hazy mind I post this.

'RIP Jacob Mabb you were such an awesome man.'

While the rugby club said: 'USC Rugby is very sad to inform our members that current A Grade player Jacob Mabb passed away yesterday.

'Jacob is a much loved member of the USC Rugby Family. He will be remembered for his calmness off the field, and his ferocity and passion when on the field.

'He was a fantastic human being, all round good bloke and a role model to many of the younger members of the USC rugby family.'

Friends of Mr Mabb told 10 News First he was a 'young man with everything ahead of him.'

An outpouring of love and well-wishes was also posted online after the accident from friends and family.

'Jacob we are praying for you,' one person said.

A GoFundMe page was set up to raise money for Mr Mabb to fly him home after his insurance initially refused to pay for a medical evacuation flight home.

The page was closed after $50,000 was raised and insurance agreed to cover the flight back to Australia.
