Man arrested after Police swarm apartment building following reports of gunman

A man was arrested after police swarmed a high-rise public housing apartment block in Carlton amid reports a man with a gun was inside the building.

Officers surrounded the apartment tower on Drummond Street about 2.45pm after a witness reported seeing three men, including one who appeared to be holding a firearm, walking into the building.

It's understood two men were seen running out of the building towards Rathdowne Street just before 7pm.

Police ran after the duo, who spilt up and ran in opposite directions.

One of the men was caught and arrested a short time later.

The whereabouts of the other two men is unclear.

Police have cordoned off the whole apartment block and several heavily armed specialist police officers were seen entering the building just after 3.30pm.

Other heavily armed officers are also at the scene scouring the outside of the building and front entrance.

It is understood the apartment block is in lock-down. The trio remain inside.

The nearby Central Carlton Children's Centre is also believed to be in lock-down, but an employee declined to comment when contacted by The Age.

Soon after, police locked down Carlton Primary School before pick up, with parents and students still inside.

Police have since safely evacuated the school and child-care centre, police spokeswoman Melissa Seach said.

There are no reports of injuries or shots being fired, Ms Seach added.
