Jeevathalam Chelannur focuses on physical exercise and scientific diet

The Chelannur block panchayat in Kozhikode district has launched an initiative to contain lifestyle diseases, considered to be a major public health concern. Titled Jeevathalam Chelannur, the project focuses on regular physical exercise and scientific diet to address the issue.

According to O.P. Shobhana, president of the panchayat, it is being held jointly with the community health centre, Narikkuni. “Recent studies have shown that lifestyle diseases are turning out to be a cause for concern. Regular exercise, healthy diet, and lifestyle are essential for resisting them,” said a note from the panchayat.

Ms. Shobhana said the project would be implemented on a pilot basis in one residential association in one ward of Narikkuni, Chelannur, Kakkodi, Kakkoor, Nanmanda and Thalakkulathoor grama panchayats.

Pre-check-ups will be held for residents, and their lifestyle issues and details of medical treatment will be recorded. Based on this, the physical exercise of their requirement will be suggested. Jogging, ground exercise, swimming, shuttle badminton, volleyball, football, yoga, cycling, and karate are some of them.

Usha School of Athletics, founded by legendary athlete P.T. Usha, has already trained a group of 30 people.

Ms. Shobhana said the plan was to ensure that at least 60% of residents changed their lifestyle for the good.

Three months later, health check-up camps will be held again to see if there is any marked change in health parameters.

Minister for Transport A.K. Saseendran on Sunday formally launched the project.

Ms. Shobhana said a health survey would be held in select wards in December, January, and February. Based on its findings, a decision to extend the project to other wards will be taken, she added.
