The tangled route to Brexit just became even thornier.

A senior adviser to the European Union’s top court said Tuesday that the U.K. can back out of its fraught decision to leave the trading bloc without permission from other members, possibly undermining Prime Minister Theresa May’s attempt to overcome fierce opposition to her Brexit deal by casting next week’s critical parliamentary vote as a make-or-break moment.
