NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police constable was bludgeoned and strangled to death by four men hired by a 30-year-old cab driver who owed the cop Rs 8 lakh. The men ambushed constable Dinesh Kumar near KN Katju Marg on Thursday while he was going to work, killed him and dumped his body in the bushes.
The murder mystery unravelled on Tuesday when the hired killers were arrested. The mastermind, Narender, a resident of Holambi Kalan village in north Delhi, stayed with Kumar’s family during this period. He took part in the cop’s last rites and even went to the police station to learn about the investigation and give information about possible suspects. The suspicion fell on him after cops found his statements contradictory.
DCP (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said that the arrested killers — Sahil alias Kandi, Ankit, Nitesh and Sahil — were promised Rs 5 lakh for the murder.
Narender came in contact with Kumar’s family in 2009. He earned their trust after helping the family during the illness of Kumar’s father, who was also in Delhi Police. After his father’s death in 2014, Kumar got the job on compensatory grounds.
After some time, Narender sought a loan of Rs 3.5 lakh from Kumar to buy a cab. “Dinesh took a loan and gave him the money. The amount rose to Rs 8 lakh after Narender asked for more money. He promised to return the money from the cab earnings,” an investigating officer said.
However, Narender sold the cab without informing Kumar, who at that time needed money for his sister’s wedding. After Kumar’s repeated demands to pay the loan, relations soured between them. Narender then came up with the idea of killing Kumar.
The cab driver contacted his friend Nitesh and promised him Rs 5 lakh for killing Kumar. Nitesh agreed to it and roped in Kandi, Ankit and Sahil.
On Thursday, they found Kumar on a desolated stretch near KN Katju Marg at 11.40pm. They first hit his head with a brick, dragged him to the nearby bushes and strangled him. They also disfigured his face make it difficult for police to identify the body.
