Coconut growers along the Communist Party of India cadre staged a protest in Pattukottai town in Thanjavur district on Monday demanding the government to provide them adequate compensation for the extensive damage caused to coconut farmers.
The protest called by the CPI and headed by the party's senior leader R. Nallakannu saw the participation of coconut growers of Pattukottai, Peravurani and Orathanadu. They took out a rally from Pattukottai bus stand to the office of the Revenue Divisional Officer where they staged the demonstration in support of their demands.
The demonstrators wanted the State government to provide ₹20,000 for every coconut tree that had got uprooted in the recent cyclone.
They said the compensation amount announced by the State government was inadequate to the coconut growers.
They also urged the Centre and the State government to provide due compensation to all type of trees that had uprooted in the recent cyclone besides granting ₹25,000 per acre for paddy.
Higher compensation for all those who had lost their homes in the cyclone, waiver of loans obtained by farmers affected by the cyclone and declaring the districts affected by the Gaja cyclone as disaster struck were among their other demands.
