NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday latched on to Rahul Gandhi's "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" barb and said the 'naamdaar' has issued a 'fatwa' to stop him from using the slogan.

Addressing a rally in Rajasthan, PM Modi chanted 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' 10 times and said the Congress president should be ashamed for his comments.

"You (Gandhi) should be ashamed for this. Freedom fighters embraced death by saying Bharat Mata ki Jai. Our soldiers carry out surgical strikes and say Bharat Mata ki Jai. You are insulting Bharat Mata," the PM said.

PM Modi was responding to Rahul Gandhi's barb at an election rally earlier in the day in Rajasthan.

Rahul said the Prime Minister recites 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' in all his election rallies, but works for industrialist Anil Ambani.

"In every address, he says Bharat Mata Ki Jai and works for Anil Ambani. He should begin his address by saying 'Anil Ambani ki Jai', 'Mehul Choksi ki Jai', 'Nirav Modi ki Jai' and 'Lalit Modi ki Jai',” Rahul said.

Rahul said that Modi did not talk about the issues of farmers, women and youth -- who comprise 'Bharat mata' - and only raised slogans.

Modi also hit out at former chief minister Ashok Gehlot's reported remarks of "who knows who will become crorepati", saying it reflected the real intention of Congress party.

Gehlot made the remarks when media asked him who would be the chief minister if the party won.
