The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday summoned the Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise, Tiruchi, and the Director of Tiruchi Airport, to appear on December 6 for failing to implement a notification issued for international courier operations through the airport.

A Division Bench of Justices K. K. Sasidharan and G. R. Swaminathan sought the appearance of both the officials for failing to comply with the court’s earlier order that had directed the authorities concerned to implement the notification.

The contempt petition was filed by Express Courier Operators’ Association of Tiruchi who complained of inaction on the part of the authorities concerned and sought appropriate action against them. The courier operators filed the petition after the authorities failed to implement the notification as per court’s order. They had earlier filed a writ petition in 2017 before the High Court Bench seeking a direction to implement the notification.
