VADODARA: A Vadodara-based firm has designed the stunning vistadome coach that will run on the narrow gauge section on the Kalka-Shimla route soon.
Hindustan Fibre Glass Works has developed the vistadome coach which for the first time will provide tourists an opportunity to experience snow and rainfall through the glass-enclosed coaches.
“The vistadome coach has a glass ceiling and the visibility can be electronically controlled,” said Ashish Patel, CEO of Hindustan Fibre Glass Works, which has developed the coach at its manufacturing facility at Por GIDC industrial estate.
“It also has features of LED lights and a GPS based information system,” he said, adding that large glass windows and observation lounge will offer passengers a panoramic view of the sites.
The specially-designed coach, a first of its kind, will run on the 92km rail route from Kalka to Shimla.
“For now, only one coach will be attached to the train but more will be added soon,” he said.
The only such coach in a narrow gauge network exists in the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Coaches with transparent roofs to enjoy the scenic beauty outside are currently run in broad gauge networks between Mumbai-Goa and Vishakapatnam to Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh.
It is worth mentioning here that Indian Railways has plans to add 100 super-luxury glass-roofed vistadome coaches in trains on several routes throughout the country to attract more passengers and promote tourism.
“We will be bidding to bag the order of developing more such coaches,” he said.
