Patna Businessman Spends Night in Jail After Cops Misread Court Order Written in English

Patna: In an incident that is likely to offend Grammar Nazis, a Patna businessman who was to be assessed for failing to pay maintenance to his wife, paid a bigger price and landed up in jail, thanks to the cops’ poor understanding of English language.
Neeraj Kumar fighting a divorce case was arrested on November 25 and had to spend a night in a police lock-up when the cops mistook the word ‘warrant’ written on top of a court order for an arrest warrant, wrote the Times of India. The warrant was, in reality, a ‘distress warrant’ — a directive to assess the businessman’s property documents as he had not being paying maintenance to his wife.

Kumar, a Jehanabad resident, had reportedly filed a divorce petition in 2014 after his wife lodged two dowry cases against him.
