Nine young children and two adults are being assessed by paramedics for breathing difficulties after they were exposed to chemical fumes at a public swimming pool.

New South Wales Ambulance crews were called to Wollondilly Community Leisure Centre in Sydney's southwest about 10am on Monday where it's believed an incorrect chemical mixture led to the fumes being released.

The children are under the age of six.

The Wollondilly Council has shared on Twitter that Leisure Centre shut its doors this morning after the incident

One child has been rushed to hospital in a serious condition. There were five other people taken to hospital in a stable condition

Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Police were at the scene.

All patients were suffering from breathing issues, an Ambulance NSW spokesman said.

The Wollondilly Council intially closed leisure centre after the incident but it has partially reopened.

'The indoor pool will remain closed until mid-afternoon as a precaution, while the outdoor pool, gym and foyer remain open.'

The area has been ventilated by fire crews, there is no evidence of smell remaining.
