After not communicating for six years, the pair finally repaired their relationship

Dr Kerryn Phelps and her eldest daughter did not speak for six years following a public falling out - until a simple letter brought them back together.

The relationship between Sydney-based physician, who won the Wentworth by-election in October, and her daughter Jaime Fronzek began to fracture after her mother came out just after her 18th birthday.

Matters were only made worse when Jaime, Dr Phelps's parents, and her ex-husband defended themselves to an Australian magazine following the release of a biography written by Dr Phelps and her wife Jackie Stricker.

At the time, Jamie told the publication that if she could turn back time she would to change a few things.

'...why did they have to do this, write this book about our family and make it public?'

Speaking to Australian Story on Monday, Jamie said at the time she was a 'confused and a painful teenager' and was having a rift with her mother's new partner.

To take time for herself, Jamie moved overseas and didn't contact her mother for six years.

'It was always a source of great distress for me, and Jackie, being Jackie, said, "Right. Enough of this",' Dr Phelps told the program.

In 2003, Jamie said she was stunned to find a letter in her mailbox from Ms Stricker.

'When my mother died in 2003, because family was so important to me, I didn't want that to happen again. I didn't want Jaime to lose her mother, I didn't want Kerryn to lose her daughter,' Ms Stricker told Australian Story.

Soon after, Jamie returned to Australia with the hope of mending their relationship.

'I saw Jaime's face at the door and I was just overwhelmed with relief and with, um...emotion. And we talked for hours,' Dr Phelps said.

Ms Stricker claims the distance ended up stregenthening their relationship.

'Within seconds of them seeing each other, they were in each others' arms. Lots of talking. The rift was healed over. And that was many years ago now, and I think the relationship that they have is even stronger because of it,' she told Australian Story.
