Action will be taken to tackle parking problems at a Snowdonia beauty spot.

Concerns have been raised about parking on the A5 in the Ogwen Valley causing congestion as vehicles try to pass each other. Some vehicles have been seen parking on pavements forcing pedestrians to step into the road.

Community leaders have called the Welsh Government to act on a report they received more than six months ago.

Replying to a written question by Arfon AM Siân Gwenllian the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport, Ken Skates, promised "positive steps".

In his note Mr Skates said: "We are taking action to alleviate parking issues at this popular location.

"Short, medium and long-term options have been identified in the study we commissioned and discussions will now begin with stakeholders to progress measures which can be implemented quickly.

"Medium and long-term options will require more time and consultation. However, we will seek to complete these as soon as possible."

Solutions proposed by locals to tackle the problem include a park-and-ride system with parking banned or charged for at the worst affected locations on the road.

Ms Gwenllian, who has been campaigning for improvements at the spot, gave the announcement a cautious welcome.

She said: "I’m glad that at long last there seems to be a way forward with dealing with the obvious traffic and parking problems along the A5 and in particular in the Llyn Ogwen area where there are serious safety concerns.

"There are short-term measures that can be put into effect but long-term solutions also need to be found.

"Welsh Government needs to move quickly as 12 months have already been lost during this long-drawn out process.

"I’m glad to have been able to work with local councillors to get to this outcome."
