Vandals steal nuts and bolts of Signature Bridge cables

NEW DELHI: After bouts of dangerous-selfie stunts and multiple vehicle accidents, now damage done by vandals is raising questions over the security situation at the Signature Bridge.
Vandals have started stealing the nut and bolts from the cables connecting the pylon with the surface. Each cable rests on 12 such nut and bolts. Some of these nut bolts were found to be missing on Monday morning.
Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) engineers expressed shock over the missing nut and bolts, adding that welding will be carried out to prevent such acts in future. “These parts were not missing earlier, this is an extremely shocking act. If sufficient number of bolts are removed, this seemingly simple act of vandalism can become a safety hazard. We will find a solution with stronger welding or by deploying guards,” the official said.
The bridge has not yet been handed over to the Public Works Department, as the work on upper segments, where a gallery would be present, is still not over. Delhi tourism also plans to close down the bridge from 11pm to 5am for completion of remaining portion of the 22m segment. “For the time being, we are not stopping the traffic at night, but will be done if needed,” the official added. Delhi tourism department has already sought permission for this from Delhi Police and other associated departments.
