The cleaning drive initiated by an IPS officer at Sabarimala is a big hit

The Punyam Poonkavanom cleaning programme initiated by Inspector General of Police P. Vijayan in 2011 at Sabarimala is a big hit this time too. The system involves an hour-long intensive cleaning drive at the Lower Tirumuttom of the Ayyappa temple and surrounding areas from 9 a.m. every day during the annual Mandalam-Makaravilakku season.

VIPs take part

The project turned popular among the pilgrims and hit headlines with VIPs visiting Sabarimala making it a point to take part in the cleaning drive.

In recognition of his contributions to the programme, the Kerala High Court appointed Mr. Vijayan the nodal officer of the Punyam Poonmkavanom initiative. The Director General of Police too appointed him the programme co-ordinator.

Mr Vijayan said the idea was to ensure effective cleaning and sanitation at Sabarimala through a collective effort. The ABASS and the Sabarimala Ayyappa Seva Samajom (SASS) have extended active support to the programme. The two organisations have introduced the cleaning programme at various other pilgrim centres.
