A man has been charged after a wild brawl at St Kilda foreshore
A 19-year-old Truganina man appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Sunday morning charged with assaulting police, making threats to kill and possessing cannabis, following a brawl involving a large number of youths on the St Kilda foreshore on Saturday night.
Dau Mabior, who was also charged with breaching bail, was remanded to reappear in the Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Police said Mabior became threatening towards police after they attended the foreshore, near Jacka Boulevard, to control a group of youths after a brawl broke out shortly after 10.30pm.
He is accussed of verbally abusing police, including threatening to stab them. He was later arrested in nearby Acland Street where he was found to be in possession of cannabis.
A second man was interviewed and released pending summons in relation to possessing a prohibited weapon.
Four people were injured during the violent outbreak which is believed to have involved up to 100 youths.
Meanwhile, Police arrested nine people following antisocial behaviour in Rye on Saturday night.
A large number of youths gathered at the foreshore area and Police officers responded to several brawls and drunken behaviour about 11pm.
More than 30 people were searched for weapons but no arrests were made.
Nine people were arrested in relation to riotous behaviour, possesing drugs and liquor and being drunk in a public place.
In St Kilda, one male sustained non-life threatening injuries during the foreshore brawl but declined treatment.
Police also received reports of a robbery and assault in the vicinity, with a 24-year-old Burwood East man and 26-year-old Wheelers Hill man taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
A third man, a 20-year-old from Vermont South, sustained minor injuries but also declined treatment.
The brawl comes one month after a melee and assault outside St Kilda's popular Donovans restaurant, also on Jacka Boulevard, where a group of youths of African appearance set upon kitchen staff from the restaurant and other innocent bystanders.
On November 19, two teenagers were arrested after police attended St Kilda foreshore following reports of troubling behaviour involving a large youth gathering.
A spokeswoman for Victoria Police said the group involved in Saturday night's violence was made up youth from different cultural backgrounds and could not confirm if the brawl was related to previous violence along the foreshore.
