Three remain critical after the fire struck Samrat Ashok building

A fire broke out in a building near Mahalaxmi Racecourse early on Sunday, killing one person. Out of the 98 people evacuated from the building, three remain critical.

The incident happened around 2.30 a.m in Samrat Ashok building. Four fire engines were sent to the spot, for what was categorised as a level II fire. The fire broke out in the electric duct on the third floor and travelled all the way to the top of the 18-storey building.

Around 20-30 people ran outside. Since the smoke affected visibility, the fire brigade rescued around 50-60 people.

The fire was extinguished only after 5.30 a.m. A total of 96 people were treated at Nair Hospital (sent by fire brigade or self) of which one person, Laxmi Koli, was declared dead.

About 77 were discharged after treatment while 18 continue to be admitted. Of the 18, one is critical. Two people were taken to Bhatia Hospital and they too are both critical.
