Muthukumaraswamy, former Tamil Nadu advocate general, dies

CHENNAI: Designated senior advocate and former advocate-general of Tamil Nadu R Muthukumaraswamy passed away here on Sunday. He was 70 and had not been keeping well for sometime.
Born on December 25, 1948, Muthukumaraswamy had 45 years of practice at the Bar.
An alumni of the Presidency College here, he studied law at the Madras Law College and enrolled as an advocate on August 1, 1973.
Muthukumaraswamy started his carrier under the guidance of senior counsel R Krishnamoorthy and was associated with him till 2001.
He was appointed as the special government pleader for the Madras high court in 1994 and was later appointed as the government pleader in 1995.
Muthukumaraswamy had served as the additional advocate general of Tamil Nadu during the 2001-2006 of Jayalalithaa regime.
Commanding a reputation of being an affable, soft-spoken but no-nonsense lawyer, Muthukumaraswamy had rich experience in civil, writ, service and service jurisprudence.
He was elected as the president of the prestigious and country's oldest bar association - The Madras Bar Association in April 2012. He was an honorary advisor in the editorial board of the Madras Law Journal.
He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
The body is kept at his residence (No 8) in Eighth Street at Dr RadhaKrishnan Salai. The last rites will be held at Kailasapuram Crematorium at 3pm on Monday.
