PANAJI: The mercury dropped 2.3 degree C below normal to 19 degrees C on Thursday, the lowest of the season so far. But a cyclonic circulation over Konkan and adjoining Maharashtra disrupted its progress.
The nip in the air was pleasant in the morning, given the mild winter witnessed in Goa. Northeasterly winds had started blowing since November 25 and the mercury started going down gradually. On Sunday and Monday, India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji, had recorded a minimum temperature of 22+ degree C
From 21.3 degree C on Tuesday, it dropped to 21.3 degrees C on Wednesday and 19 degrees C on Thursday. But the cyclonic circulation persisting between 2.1km and 3.1km interrupted the trend, triggering a two degree rise in the mercury. IMD, Panaji recorded 21 degrees C, just 0.3 above normal on Friday and 20.6 degree C on Saturday.
“The impact of cyclonic circulation will weaken and dry weather will prevail,” M L Sahu, director, IMD, Panaji said. The sky was covered with thin clouds, which blocks the escape of heat during night hours and temperature goes up.
The day temperatures have been hovering between 33+ and 34+ degree C during the last week. There is a slight relief from the higher temperatures of 35+ recorded on a number of days during November.
