They neither had training, nor safety gears; four people held

Navi Mumbai: The Uran police on Friday arrested four people after two labourers died while unloading granites from a container. The incident occurred on Thursday when Customs officers were checking goods at APM terminal of Container Freight Station, JNPT, Navghar.

“The consignment from China was for Mayank granites company in Malad. Usually during such checking, CFS employees do the unloading and loading, but since these granites are heavy, they declined to do it. The company hired labourers for the job,” police sub-inspector Ganesh Karad, Uran police station, said.

While unloading from the container, granites fell on the labourers, killing two on the spot. While Sitaram Verma (40) and Nankau Nai (35), died, Shamsundar alias Ramnarayan Verma (25) was severely injured.

“All the labourers were from Uttar Pradesh. Such heavy work needs special training, and labourers also need to have safety gear like helmet. None of them was provided either by the granite company or the labourer contractors. The incident was a result of their negligence,” Mr. Karad said.

The accused have been identified as Shivnath Garva (28), manager of granite company, Dattatrey Pise (31), a clearing agent, and two labourer contractors Nandlal Paswan (24) and Randeer Rai (26). They were arrested under Sections 304 A (causing death by negligence), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. They were presented in court which remanded them in judicial custody.
