Of 1,128 assurances made in Assembly last year 905 pending

The State has fulfilled none of the 343 assurances made this year within the stipulated 90 days, the Assurance Committee’s report submitted in the Assembly on Friday has revealed.

The assurances were given by Ministers, including the Chief Minister, during the first session of the Assembly in March this year.

The report said, “Assurances given in the Assembly need to be fulfilled by officials within 90 days and a detailed report should be sent to the committee. In case of judicial blocks, the officials need to inform them to the committee. The government needs to form a policy to ensure action against officials who delay the entire process.”

According to the report, of the 1,128 assurances made in the Assembly last year, 223 were fulfilled and 905 are pending. Since 2014, the BJP–led State government has given 7,241 assurances, of which 3,573 are still pending. The report has listed data from 1991 and it shows that of the 47,252 assurances given in the Assembly, 4,290 are still pending.

The report said, “The committee believes that the time limit of 90 days should not be crossed. As per the committee’s assessment, every assurance can be fulfilled within or even in less than 90 days.”

The report pointed out that often there was a discrepancy between the assurances made by a Minister and the action taken report by the department concerned. It said, “This essentially means that the officers either show negligence or carelessness in fulfilling their duty.” The report expressed its strong disapproval of the failure of officers to attend proceedings of the committee meeting.
