Islam made 73 for BCB XI in a two-day practice match ahead of the series, and on Friday said, “The practice game helped me a lot as I was aware of their bowling unit. I planned the same way I had planned against them in the practice game.
The 23-year-old scored 76 and contributed to Bangladesh reaching 259 for 5 at the end of day one’s play added, “The seniors are very experienced and they told me to bat like the way I bat in domestic cricket.”
Since Tamim Iqbal’s injury in the Asia Cup, Liton Das and Imrul Kayes have not been able to perform consistently at the opener’s slot.
Liton Das could only manage 47 runs in the Tests against Zimbabwe, while Kayes has scored just 97 runs in his last three Test matches.
Islam’s knock was encouraging for the team, but he lamented missing out on a century on Test debut.
“There is regret because everyone would like to score a hundred on debut,” he said. “I tried to give my best shot in the middle (but) probably couldn't fulfil the requirements totally as I felt I could (have) contributed a bit more for the team.”
Islam has 648 first-class runs to his name this year, and he certainly looks like he has carried his domestic form into international cricket.
