He had kidnapped, raped a 14-year-old

A rape accused who was on the run for the past 11 years was nabbed on Thursday from Haryana’s Samalkha, the police said on Friday.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ajit Kumar Singla said Mohd Akhtar had changed his name to Anand, and was hiding in Gurugram, Noida and Bihar. He was working as a taxi driver to earn a living, the police said.

Mr. Singla said the accused had allegedly kidnapped a 14-year-old girl from Kapashera in 2007.

Teams were formed to nab him following a complaint lodged by the victim’s father.

“During investigation, the girl was rescued from Bihar and handed over to her parents but the accused managed to escape. Based on the girl’s statement, sections of rape were added,” the officer said.

Tip-off

In 2008, the accused was declared a proclaimed offender and in 2014 a bounty of ₹25,000 was announced on his head. On Thursday, the team received a tip-off. A trap was laid and he was arrested, Mr. Singla said. The accused allegedly told police that he was married and had children at the time of the incident.
