Lucknow: The engineering students of Babasaheb Bhirmrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) turned violent and vandalised property on the campus after their demand to postpone the examinations was rejected by the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) director Prof Kaman Singh on Friday. Three students, including a girl, were injured.
On Friday, about 60 engineering students met Kaman Singh and demanded their examinations scheduled from December 7 be postponed by a month as the syllabus in most of the subjects was incomplete.
When the UIET director refused to accept the demand, the students raised slogans and got into a heated argument with him. Prof Singh then allegedly slapped a student. Thereafter, the students went on a rampage — broke the window panes and damaged the university property. “How can they conduct the examinations when the course is incomplete. We were only demanding the postponement of examinations but the director slapped me,” said BTech student Prabhat. He said the vice-chancellor had assured them that the examinations will not be held unless the syllabus was completed.
“We have also been demanding the removal of Prof Kaman Singh because he is from the chemistry department and doesn’t have any idea about the engineering department. Instead of listening to students, he slapped and abused students,” said PhD student Abhishek Mishra who was present when the incident took place.
Prof Singh denied slapping any student and said that some rowdy elements, who were not from the engineering department, had instigated the students for violence. “I have written to the proctor board to file an FIR against eight students involved in the incident. These students have intentionally made an attempt to disturb peace on the campus,” he said.
He, however, said that considering the students’ demand, BBAU will conduct exams of only those engineering subjects from December 7 whose syllabus is complete. The remaining papers will be held a week later, he added.
