A large group of farmers filled the streets of the national Capital on Friday as they marched from the Ramlila Maidan towards the Parliament. Nearly 20,000 farmers from 24 states have come together to demand loan waiver.
The march began around 10.30 am. The protest received support from people from all walks of life including doctors, lawyers, professors, and artists. The main demand of the farmers includes a special session of Parliament to pass bills seeking a loan waiver and better prices of crops.
The protest also saw leaders like Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Samajwadi Party leader Dharmendra Yadav, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, CPI leader S Sudhakar Reddy, AAP MP Sanjay Singh, and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah joining the protest at Jantar Mantar. The politicians left no stone unturned to attack the BJP. Ironically, the protestors had also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to join the march.
The rally is the fourth major farmers rally in over a year, representing over 200 groups. It was also supported by students from various universities and saw active participation by a large number of female farmers from various parts of the country. A group of women from Telangana marched on the streets of Delhi with pictures of their husbands, who had committed suicide due to agrarian woes, hung around their necks.
With regards to security, the Delhi police had made elaborate arrangements in order to ensure that no untoward incident occurred. The police had stopped the farmers at Parliament Street. From water cannons to rapid action force, all security arrangements were in place in if required. Lunch preparations were made available by Gurudwaras supporting the protest. After much chanting of slogans and furling of flags, the protestors dispersed at 5.30 pm.
