Rights panel seeks report on killing of alleged Maoist

Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal, The MP Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) has issued a notice to the state police in connection with the gunning down of a suspected Maoist in Balaghat on November 24. The incident had occurred in jungles of Godri under Hatta police station area in Balaghat, according to a press release of the MPHRC.

The chairman of the commission, Justice (retired) Narendra Kumar Jain has taken cognizance of the incident in which the Hawk Force had been allegedly fired at by seven Naxalites and they had retaliated. Later, a body was found on the spot.

Media reports suggested that the killed person was Maoist was Raghu alias Somji, a native of Dadekasa in Balaghat. He reportedly carried a reward of Rs3 lakhs. Police said among the 7 Maoists who had fired, there was a woman too.

The rights panel has taken note of the fact that the police were certain whether the person killed during an operation by the Hawk Force of the Police was a Maoist or not.

The MPHRC has asked the state director general of police (DGP) and the Balaghat superintendent of police to submit a report on the issue within three weeks.
