Cape Town – Tom Hanks is set to play a puppet master.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the Academy award winner is in early talks to play Gepetto in Disney's live-action adaptation of Pinocchio.

Paddington director Paul King will helm the film.

The original film released in 1940 and centres on an old wood-carver named Geppetto who carves a wooden puppet named Pinocchio.

The puppet is brought to life by a blue fairy, who informs him that he can become a real boy if he proves himself to be "brave, truthful, and unselfish".

Although it went on to win Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song it was a box office disaster. It was reissued in 1945 and was then considered one of the greatest animated films with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Pinocchio is one of the live-action movies inspired by Disney’s animated back catalogue. (Read more here)
