  • Both Sidhu and Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh were invited to the groundbreaking ceremony of Kartarpur corridor in Pakistan
  • While the CM had declined to go, Sidhu attended the ceremony and received much flak for it from the CM and the BJP
  • The cricketer-turned-politician added that Rahul Gandhi is not just his captain, but that of the entire party
NEW DELHI: The differences between Navjot Singh Sidhu and Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh came to the fore once again on Friday when the former cricketer said that his only "Captain" in the party is Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Amarinder Singh is referred to as "Captain" due to his rank in the Indian Army.

When asked about "Captain" disapproving his visit to Pakistan + , Sidhu mockingly responded, "Which Captain? He (Amarinder) is a captain in the Army ... but my captain is Rahul Gandhi. It is he who sent me to Pakistan."

The cricketer-turned-politician added that Rahul Gandhi is not just his captain, but that of the entire party.

Sidhu further added that he goes everywhere with the consent of his "captain".

The Punjab chief minister had earlier said that he had asked Sidhu not to attend the ceremony in Pakistan amid terror attacks in the state.

SAD, BJP slam Navjot Sidhu for 'disobeying' CM and visiting Pakistan

Amarinder on Tuesday had said that he had asked Sidhu to reconsider his decision on going to Pakistan for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kartarpur corridor. Amarinder had said he acceded to Sidhu's request as he did not believe in stopping anyone from undertaking a "personal visit".

Highlighting the growing differences with his minister, CM Amarinder had said he had acceded to Sidhu’s request to travel to Pakistan since he did not believe in stopping anyone from undertaking a personal visit.

Amarinder said that Sidhu had later sent him a request for going and he had approved it. He also made it clear that Sidhu was on a personal trip and not an official visit.

"At least 20 Congress leaders asked me to go. The Central leadership of the party asked me to go. Punjab Cabinet Minister is like my father, I told him that I had already promised them (Pakistan) that I will go," Sidhu told ANI on Friday.

Both Sidhu and Amarinder had been invited to attend the ground-breaking event at Narowal by Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Amarinder was quick to decline the invitation citing continued terrorist attacks in Punjab and killings of Indian soldiers by Pakistan armed forces.
