GURUGRAM: A Class 12 student of a leading private school in the city has complained that his two uncles sexually harassed him repeatedly over a period of eight years, between 2007 and 2015.
The teen, who turned 18 last month, recently approached the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) seeking help, after police allegedly refused to register his complaint against his father’s elder brothers.

The teenager further claimed that he was forced to keep silent all those years as even his father apparently did not believe him. In fact, the 18-year-old claimed, when he had shared his ordeal with his father a few years ago, he had allegedly rebuked and thrashed the boy for “spreading rumours” against his two uncles. While one of his uncles works with an auto company, the other is an officer with a paramilitary force.

Finally, a couple of years ago, the boy confided in his mother, who approached police. However, the police, instead of taking any action, allegedly tried to impress upon the boy that nothing had happened. The cops repeatedly questioned the boy, asking him to share the details of sexual harassment he had allegedly faced. Eventually, the police refused to file any complaint in the matter and rejected his complaint as “cooked up things”, the student claimed.

When repeated complaints to the police went in vain, his mother wrote to the NCPCR. “The boy’s mother had written to NCPCR, which forwarded the matter to us recently for necessary action,” said Shakuntala Dhull, chairperson of the child welfare committee (CWC) in Gurugram.

“After counselling, prima facie, it seems the boy was indeed harassed. The student appeared very disturbed while talking about harassment. Even his past academic records show poor performance during the years he claimed to have undergone the ordeal, while he has been a topper in his class in the last two years,” Dhull said. The CWC chairperson added, “He is still disturbed. During the counselling, when we asked him about his plight, he said it was like mental torture for him as he had been repeating the same story again and again, first to the police and now to us. We have referred the case to the police for immediate action. The culprits should be punished.”

Based on the CWC recommendation, an FIR was registered against the two uncles under Section 4 of the POCSO Act at Sushant Lok police station on Thursday.

“All that I can say is that we have got a complaint and registered an FIR. We are investigating the matter,” said inspector Arvind Kumar, SHO. While the police are refraining from sharing any more details, sources claim the boy’s mother had moved out of her husband’s house a few years ago. The boy now lives with his mother. She had also earlier lodged a complaint with the police, accusing her husband and his two elder brothers of dowry harassment. They said the police were probing the latest case keeping in mind the ongoing tussle between the two sides.
